Academic year interns

During the academic year, the IRW is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students from American University’s School of Communication who are paid by the hour for their work. IRW also offers a limited number of academic year positions to students from other DC-area colleges and universities. If interested, contact managing editor Lynne Perri or executive editor Wesley Lowery.

Summer interns

Each summer the IRW hires a set of undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates from across the country for roles as reporters, researchers, data journalists, videographers, graphic designers and web producers. Those hired work out of our newsroom in Washington, reporting original stories overseen by our editors and in collaboration with our publishing partners.

The summer stipend is $675 per week, and we will offer a one-time, $1,000 housing stipend to offset the cost of living in Washington, D.C.  Positions run from 8 to 10 weeks, with flexible start dates, depending on the end date of an individual student’s spring semester. IRW internships typically end by early August. Transportation is not provided.

The 2024 summer internship application period is now closed.
