Meryl Kornfield graduated recently with honors from the University of Florida, where she studied journalism and Latin America.
While at UF, Meryl worked at the school’s independent student newspaper, The Alligator, where she rose from staff writer to editor-in-chief. She has previously interned at the South Florida Sun Sentinel, The Palm Beach Post and Gainesville Sun. At every paper she’s worked, she’s tackled difficult topics from criminal justice to housing equity. This past spring, she was on a pilot team of student journalists who covered Florida’s legislative session, where she focused on issues related to the elderly community in Florida. Her work was published by the Associated Press in newspapers across the state.
In addition to print and web, Kornfield also has ventured into TV, learning how to create compelling visual stories to share on a nightly news broadcast. She was a part of a team that created an immersive web and video project on the mental health of kids and families after hurricanes. She plans to continue educating communities about laws and government practices that impact them through multimedia storytelling.
