Double Exposure, the United States’ first film festival dedicated to investigative reporting on film, is now in its eighth year. The three-day program takes place next week and will showcase some of the most compelling new documentaries including: 

“The Grab” – directed by Gabriela Coperthwaite

This film follows award-winning journalist Nathan Halverson and his team at the Center for Investigative Reporting as they trace a leak of documents to its source, revealing steps by China, Saudi Arabia and other countries to gain control of food and water resources.

Screening: Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. – A Q&A will follow this screening with producer Amanda Pike and protagonist/producer Halverson.

“American Pain” – directed by Darren Foster

This film chronicles bodybuilding twin brothers who team up to create storefront pill mills in South Florida distributing oxycodone.

Screening: Oct. 14 at 8:30 p.m. – A Q&A will follow this screening with director Darren Foster.

“Retrograde” – directed by Matthew Heineman

This film looks at the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan after the 20-year war, focusing on the Green Berets and the Afghan officers they trained.

Screening: Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. – A Q&A will follow this screening with director and Oscar and Emmy nominee Matthew Heinman.

This year’s program from Oct. 13-16 is in-person in Washington, D.C., and also available virtually. The festival is a project of the investigative news organization 100Reporters, and combines film screenings for the public with a professional symposium for journalists and visual storytellers.
