Gunhild Ring Olsen
Gunhild Ring Olsen is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar from Norway. She will stay with the Investigative Reporting Workshop for the academic year 2014-2015 as part of her PhD program at the University of Bergen. Her research topic is the world of nonprofit journalism and partnerships between media and major universities.
Olsen is a lecturer in journalism at Volda University College in Norway, where she has been teaching for the last four years. Her specialities are print- and online journalism and the selection of news. She has 10 years’ experience as a news journalist, copy desk editor and news editor in the Norwegian newspapers Klassekampen, Aftenposten, VG, Universitas and Farsunds Avis.
In 2012 Olsen wrote two chapters in the book "Covering the News. News-selection in five Norwegian newsrooms," an observation study about which stories made it to the headlines of five major Norwegian newsrooms within the same week. The book is now on the reading list in all major Norwegian journalism schools (Original title: "Nyhetsvurderinger: På innsiden i fem redaksjoner"). Olsen wrote her master thesis about part-time employees in Norwegian newspapers, and how changing working conditions can challenge the ideals of journalism.
She has her bachelor's and master's degrees from the the University of Oslo.
